SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, June 10 (Xinhua) -- A militant was killed on Saturday in a gunfight near the Line of Control (LoC) dividing Kashmir, officials said.

The gunfight, according to Indian army officials, broke out in Gurez sector of Bandipora district, about 165 km north of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

According to Indian military spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia, the militant was trying to infiltrate deep inside Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"One infiltrator was killed after our alert troops foiled an infiltration bid in Gurez sector," Kalia told Xinhua. "A weapon was also recovered from the spot."

According to the spokesman, the operation was going on in the area.

On Friday five militants were killed in Uri sector while trying to infiltrate inside Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Since Wednesday the army has killed 13 militants in four different gunfights in Machil, Nowgam, Uri and Gurez. A trooper was also killed in Nowgam sector fighting militants, the officials said.

Last month six militants were killed in Rampur sector of frontier Uri in adjacent Baramulla district.

Indian army said since the beginning of this year, 22 infiltration attempts have been foiled and 34 armed intruders eliminated on the LoC.

The situation along LoC is tense since the beginning of May. Troops of India and Pakistan are currently at loggerheads with each other, especially along LoC and the international border in Kashmir. Several cease-fire violations were reported on both sides of LoC.
