DAR ES SALAAM, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said on Friday the country's anti-graft body has recovered 26.9 million U.S. dollars following concerted efforts to fight the social cancer.

Majaliwa said the money was recovered by the Prevention and Combating Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in the 2016/17 financial year through its investigations and operations.

"The recovered amount is huge compared to 3.5 million U.S. dollars recovered in 2015/2016," Majaliwa told a workshop on African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption (APNAC) Tanzania chapter in the capital Dodoma.

He highlighted different actions that were taken by the government in the fight against corruption.

He said the government managed to show how serious it was and therefore a majority of workers were observing good governance principles and ultimately reducing corruption tendencies.

"Among the strategies that were taken by the government include strengthening our PCCB bureaus through the use of electronic machines that played a great role in reducing corruption loopholes," said Majaliwa.

"We have also established an anti-corruption court which has played a great role in maintaining discipline in the public sector," he said.

Majaliwa called on the Members of Parliament to continue supporting the government, saying it will never stop its crusade in the fight against corruption in the country.

Angellah Kairuki, the Minister of State in the President's Office responsible for Public Service Management and Good Governance, said that PCCB was working with other institutions to start a curriculum on corruption in both primary and secondary schools so as to instil good governance at a very early stage.
