KIEV, June 8 (Xinhua) -- There is no reason to believe that the blast of an explosive device in the U.S. Embassy compound here early Thursday was a terror act, Ukraine's National Police said.

"The device that was thrown at the Embassy could not cause harm to anyone. That's why the case was finally qualified as malicious hooliganism," Sergiy Knyazev, the head of the National Police, said in a statement.

An unknown assailant threw an unidentified explosive device into the diplomatic mission's premises shortly after midnight in an incident that the police initially qualified as a "terror act."

Later in the day, the U.S. Embassy confirmed that the blast has occurred on its territory, without causing any casualties or damage to the embassy's property.

In a statement on Facebook, the Embassy wrote that it doest not considering the incident a terrorist act.

The Embassy is operating in a regular mode, the statement said.
