TEHRAN, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani condemned Wednesday two terror attacks in the capital Tehran, indicating that terrorism is a serious threat to global security.

"Terrorism is a global issue and it necessitates regional and international convergence to fight extremism, terrorism and violence," Rouhani said.

Also, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif condemned terror attacks in Tehran, saying that the "indiscriminate" terror attacks are threatening the Middle East and the rest of the world, Press TV reported.

Zarif urged collective work to address "very grave conditions that are prevailing the region," he was quoted as saying. "The entire region has become insecure."

At least 12 people died in the twin attacks by militants against Iran's parliament and Imam Khomeini Shrine in capital Tehran on Wednesday, Iran's Interior Ministry said in a statement.

An additional 42 people were injured in the terrorist attacks, the statement read.

In the meantime, all four assailants against the parliament and two against the Khomeini Shrine were killed.

One of the attackers on the parliament blasted his explosive belt and three others were shot dead by the security forces after about five hours siege that they laid on the gunmen's hideouts inside the parliament.

Also, out of two attackers on Khomeini Shrine, one blasted his explosive belt after shooting, the other was shot dead by the security guards.

Iran's Intelligence Ministry on Wednesday said that another terrorist team was busted before doing any operation in Tehran and some suspects were arrested.

Besides, the security deputy of Iran's Interior Ministry said that the terrorists had entered the parliament building in the women attire, according to official IRNA news agency.

However, after their incursion into the building, the security forces brought the situation under control and the terrorists had to flee to the upper floors of the building without doing any harm on the lawmakers, Hossein Zolfeghari was quoted as saying.

On Wednesday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani downplayed a terrorist attack at parliament, saying it was a "minor issue".

"Today several coward terrorists penetrated into the parliament building and were dealt with seriously," Larijani was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency.

"This (terrorist) act is a minor issue" for the country, he said, adding that terrorists are seeking to create troubles for the country, which is actively fighting against terrorism.

In the meantime, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) vowed to retaliate the Wednesday deadly terrorist attacks in the capital.

On the day, the twin attacks were simultaneously carried out in Tehran at around 10:30 a.m. local time (0600 GMT).

The gunmen were equipped with AK-47 assault rifles, handguns and explosive belts.

According to the reports, the Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
