CAIRO, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Egypt imposed temporary import tariffs on rebar steel from China, Turkey and Ukraine, reported Al-Ahram newspaper on its website on Tuesday.

The decision aims to protect local manufacturers from suffering losses arising out of imported alternatives.

The tariff is set at 17 percent for Chinese steel, 10-19 percent for Turkish steel, and 15-27 percent for Ukrainian steel, added the report.

A source from the Egyptian Trade Ministry told Xinhua on Wednesday that "the decision comes following a thorough study which gathered complaints from local manufacturers failing to compete with imported alternatives."

He added that the move aims to protect local manufacturers from harmful practices by imported alternatives.

The decision is valid for fourth months following its publication in the official paper, the source added without specifying a date for its enforcement.
