COLOMBO, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ravi Karunanayake left for India on Tuesday where he will have talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A media spokesman for Karunanayake said the top diplomat is scheduled to hold talks with Modi and other Indian officials before returning to Sri Lanka.
This is his first overseas visit since being appointed the foreign minister recently.
Local media reported earlier that Karunanayake had met Chinese Ambassador Yi Xianliang on Monday and thanked him for the assistance given by China following devastating floods and landslides.
India and China were among the first countries to respond to the disaster by sending ships and a plane loaded with urgent supplies.
So far at least 224 people have been killed and over 600,000 affected by the worst flooding and landslides to hit the country since 2003.
Over 100,000 people who were displaced are now returning home after troops and rescue teams have cleaned towns and villages which were inundated.
