AMMAN, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Exports to Iraq, one of Jordan's biggest trade partner, has decreased drastically due to land border closures between the two countries, the Jordan Strategy Forum said on Saturday.
In 2014, Iraq imported from 11 industrial Jordanian sectors at a value of approximately 1.16 billion dollars. Due to the closure of the borders in 2015, Jordanian exports to Iraq decreased to roughly 695 million dollars, it said in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Xinhua.
Jordanian exports reached 7.25 billion dollars in 2014, of which 16 percent of those exports were to Iraq.
Analysis conducted by Jordan Strategy Forum, from figures gathered by the Department of Statistics, indicate that the closure of land borders resulted in the closure of three exporting sectors.
The Animal Hides, Arts & Antiques, and Footwear & Headwear sectors stopped exporting to Iraq in 2015.
The decrease in exports to Iraq is without a doubt a burden to the Jordanian economy and in specific the industrial sector and all supporting services.
