ROME, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Italy won't go back on the Paris climate accords, and it hopes the U.S. position turns out to be positive after U.S. President Donald Trump said at the recent G7 in Sicily that he would take its time to assess and made the decision this week, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said Tuesday.

Gentiloni made the remarks at a press conference with visiting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the Lower House.

"We took note of the U.S. different position but I hope that this position will turn out in a positive way," Gentiloni said. "It is an accord from which we do not mean to retreat," he added.

Italy shares German Chancellor Angela Merkel's view that the EU "must take its future into its own hands," said Gentiloni.

According to Ansa news agency, Gentiloni stressed that the alliance with the United States was very important, but that "we have fundamental objectives which we cannot renounce, such as the environment."
