S.Korea's banking services via smartphones surpass 60 pct in Q1

SEOUL, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Banking services in South Korea through smartphones accounted for more than 60 percent in the first quarter due to the spread of smartphones usage among consumers, central bank data showed on Tuesday.

The daily average number of banking services in the cyberspace was 9,412 in the January-March quarter, up 5.9 percent from the previous quarter, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK).

The number of banking transactions through smartphones was 5,738 on a daily average basis during the quarter, taking up 61 percent of the total mobile banking services.

The percentage of smartphone banking usage continued to rise from 54.1 percent in 2015 as people increasingly used the smarpthone banking for its convenience.

In terms of value, the daily usage of smartphone banking amounted to 3.63 trillion won (3.23 billion U.S. dollars) on average in the quarter, up 8.3 percent from the previous quarter.
