BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday extended condolences to his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, over a terror attack a day earlier that killed at least 28 people in southern Egypt.

In his message to Sisi, Xi also expressed his sympathy to the families of the victims.

China opposes any form of terrorism and strongly condemns the barbaric acts of the terrorists, said Xi, adding that China firmly supports Egypt's efforts in safeguarding national security and stability, as well as the fight against terrorism.

About ten gunmen in two cars, stopped two buses heading to a church south of Cairo, and opened fire on the buses randomly, resulting in the deaths of 28 people and injuries of dozens more.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack.
