BEIJING, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed mixed on Friday as market sentiment remained cautious amid the government crack-down on financial irregularities.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged up 0.07 percent to end the day at 3,110.06 points. The smaller Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.35 percent lower at 9,859.23 points.

Total turnover on the two bourses stood at 379.5 billion yuan (about 55.24 billion U.S. dollars).

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, ended 1.02 percent lower to close at 1,759.63 points.

China's stock market has maintained a downward trend since the government escalated efforts to place the financial market under stricter regulatory scrutiny, which investors fear will squeeze liquidity.

Airline stocks surged Friday on reports that China plans to build three clusters of world-class airports.

Air China went up 5.38 percent to end the day at 9.99 yuan per share, while Juneyao Air rose 4.75 percent to 21.59 yuan.

Shares related to Xiongan New Area, a new economic zone to be built near Beijing, saw strong performance despite recent fluctuations, with eight stocks surging by the daily limit of 10 percent.

China announced plans last month to create Xiongan New Area, which authorities described as a "major historic and strategic choice" that would be "crucial for the millennium to come," sparking investors' enthusiasm over related stocks. Enditem
