U.S. dollar rises amid economic data

NEW YORK, May 25 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar climbed against most other major currencies on Thursday as investors digested a batch of economic reports.

In the week ending May 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 234,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous revised level, said the U.S. Labor Department Thursday.

The 4-week moving average was 235,250, a decrease of 5,750 form the previous week's revised average.

Meanwhile, the international trade deficit came in at 67.6 billion U.S. dollars in April, up 2.5 billion dollars from 65.1 billion dollars in March, the U.S. Commerce Department announced Thursday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, increased 0.03 percent at 97.265 in late trading.

In late New York trading, the euro rose to 1.1204 dollars from 1.1201 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound lost to 1.2938 dollars from 1.2949 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar fell to 0.7455 dollar from 0.7486 dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 111.82 Japanese yen, higher than 111.76 yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar dipped to 0.9732 Swiss franc from 0.9746 Swiss franc, and it moved up to 1.3490 Canadian dollars from 1.3426 Canadian dollars. Enditem
