ROME, May 24 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump Wednesday concluded his meetings with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Palo Gentolini separately, in which local media reports indicated discussions focusing mainly on migration issues, among others.

Due to its geography, Italy is the landing spot for more economic and political migrants than any other European country besides Greece.

Local media said Mattarella and Gentolini lobbied the U.S president to have the U.S. accept more migrants and to help pay for costly Mediterranean migrant rescue efforts.

It was the second meeting in less than a month between Trump and Gentiloni, who traveled to Washington, D.C. on an official state visit in April.

The two will meet for a third time later this week at the Group of Seven (G7) summit, which gets under way Friday in Taormina, on the southern Italian island of Sicily.

The G7 summit and joint fight against terrorism in the wake of the Manchester attack were also main topics between Trump and Gentiloni, according to Ansa news agency. The two also discussed issues of climate change and world trade.

After meeting with the Italian leaders, Trump was scheduled to fly to Brussels for a meeting of the leadership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) before returning to Italy for G-7 summit in Taormina, the final stop on his nine-day international trip.

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump also met with Pope Francis at the Vatican City.
