BRUSSELS, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The international quartet on Libya Tuesday called on wrangling parties in the war-torn North African country to work out a peaceful resolution.

"We underscored the urgent need for a Libya-led peaceful resolution of the political crisis and reiterated our rejection of the threat of use of armed forces by any Libyan parties," said Federica Mogherini, the EU's foreign policy chief, at a press point after the meeting of the quartet consisting of the EU, the United Nations, the Arab League and the African Union.

Mogherini said the quartet strongly condemned "the unprovoked attack" killing 141 people Friday in southern Libya's Brak Al-Shati air base, adding that the quartet rejected "all acts of violence".

"We called on all parties to refrain from further violence and any act that may undermine ongoing work to find a negotiated solution to the conflict," she said.

"We encourage all Libyan parties to engage in a constructive and inclusive talks," she noted, underscoring that inclusiveness was at the core of the quartet meeting.

UN envoy to Libya Martin Kobler stressed that his message was "back to politics", saying "only then that can be put an end to military escalation."

The quartet meeting is a follow-up to the one held in Cairo in March.

Libya has been suffering political division, insecurity and chaos since the uprising of 2011 that toppled the country's former leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Over 181,000 migrants and refugees, most of whom use Libya as a springboard, arrived in the EU in 2016 through the central Mediterranean route.
