UNITED NATIONS, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Tuesday condemned "in the strongest terms" the barbaric terrorist attack in Manchester, Britain, while stressing the need to intensify regional and international efforts to combat terrorism.

On Monday night, a suicide terrorist attack took place at Manchester Arena at the end of a pop concert, killing at least 22 people, several of whom were children, while injuring 59 others.

In a unanimous statement, the 15-nation council expressed its solidarity to Britain in their fight against terrorism and stressed the need to intensify regional and international efforts to overcome terrorism and violent extremism.

The council members also underlined the need to bring the perpetrators of these acts to justice and urged all states to cooperate actively with the British government and other relevant authorities in this regard, according to the statement.

The so-called Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The police named the suicide bomber as Salman Abedi. He was killed as he detonated an improvised explosive device at the Manchester Arena.
