NAIROBI, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's security agencies on Tuesday enhanced surveillance after 22 people were killed in a bomb attack during a pop concert in Britain's Manchester.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett said the police are under firm instruction to step up vigilance across the East African nation following Monday night's attack.

"I have ordered officers to step up vigilance across the country in the wake of the terror attack in the UK," Boinett said.

The area around the arena was swamped with police and emergency services and approach roads were cordoned off.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the bombing at around 10:30 pm on Monday, which is the deadliest terrorist assault in Britain since 2005.

Boinett instructed the police to screen motorists and pedestrians as well as enhance intelligence gathering to curb attacks from Al-Shabaab militants.

Kenya blames the Al-Shabaab for increased terror attacks and fears its tourist and business economy will be destroyed if it allows the insurgents to go on unchallenged.

The trend of the attacks particularly in northern Kenya which seemingly are well coordinated since few suspects have been arrested has heightened worries among Kenyans.

Earlier, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta who spoke to British Prime Minister Theresa May said Nairobi will stand with Britain in the fight against extremism.
