S. African stocks close higher on Tuesday

JOHANNESBURG, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) closed slightly higher on Tuesday.

The all-share index closed 0.06 percent higher at 54,548.91 points. The South Africa rand also tumbled and traded at R13.06 to the U.S. dollar amid news of the suspected terrorist attack in Britain as investor flight to safe-haven currencies.

Financial stocks were the better performers, but big industrial index lost 0.08 percent to 82,765.87 points.

Gold miners rallied 0.75 percent due to revised gold price and a slightly weaker rand. But big diversified miners were lower.

Among stocks on the JSE, Standard Bank was up 3.63 percent to R150.63, with Nedbank gaining 3.72 percent to R221.38.

Massmart, which has been under pressure over the few weeks, rebounded 2.29 percent to R125.82.

Pioneer Foods shed 4.9 percent to R145.5 following its interim results on Monday, in which it reported a 47-percent drop in adjusted headline earnings.

Vodacom gained more than 7 percent over the past week, traded 1.35 percent higher at R165.96.

BHP was 2.2 percent softer at R204.07 and Anglo American was 1.61 percent weaker at R183.5. Enditem
