Tokyo stocks close higher on solid U.S. shares, jump in oil prices

TOKYO, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Monday as a solid showing on Wall Street at the end of last week, coupled with a rise in oil prices bolstered investor sentiment and saw a swathe of issues advance.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 87.52 points, or 0.45 percent, from Friday to close at 19,678.28.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 7.92 points, or 0.51 percent, to finish at 1,567.65.

Iron and steel, mining, and oil and coal product-related stocks comprised those that advanced the most by the closing bell, and advancing issues outpaced declining ones by 1,354 to 531 on the First Section.

Trading volume on the main section on Monday came to 1,467.41 million shares, dropping from Friday's volume of 1,908.63 million shares.

The turnover on the first trading day of the week totaled 1,922.4 billion yen (17.26 billion U.S. dollars).
