SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, May 21 (Xinhua) -- An Indian policeman decamped with four assault rifles from post in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Sunday.

The policeman was posted at Food Corporation of India's guardroom in Budgam, 28 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A police constable Syed Naveed Mushtaq of Shopian has decamped with four service rifles from his place of posting last evening," a senior police official said. "He has taken away service rifles of his fellow policemen and so far we are unable to trace him."

Police suspect the absconding constable might have joined militant ranks.

The officials have sounded an alert and initiated operations to trace what they described the "deserter."

Last year two such incidents were reported in the region where two policemen decamped with the service rifles of fellow policemen.
