MEXICO CITY, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Nine people, including five childred, died in a house fire early Tuesday in the city of Guadalajara, capital of Mexico's western state of Jalisco.

Local authorities revealed firefighters rescued a 15-year-old who had suffered burns to 80 percent of his body, while two other people escaped by jumping out of a second-floor window.

Guadalajara's director of civil protection and firefighters, Felipe de Jesus Lopez, told the press the fire started around 5.30 a.m. in the neighborhood of Lomas de Independencia.

The two survivors said the fire spread to the bedrooms quickly while they were asleep, preventing them from trying to rescue their relatives, Lopez added.

An investigation would determine the exact cause of the fire, but initial clues shows it might be sparked by a short-circuit.
