BANGKOK, May 16 (Xinhua) -- A record haul of 2.2 million methamphetamine tablets was seized aboard a cement truck in southern Thailand on Tuesday, police said.

An estimated 2.2 million methamphetamine pills were contained in some 1,100 backpacks hidden inside a trailer truck which normally carry powdered cement in Chumporn province, about 470 km south of Bangkok.

The drug had allegedly been smuggled across the Thai-Myanmar border into Fang district of Chiang Mai province in northern Thailand and destined for Hat Yai City in the southern part of the country, police said.

It was one of the largest single hauls of "speed pills" trafficked and seized in Thailand for decades.

Two Thai males, identified as Thanisorn Sornkla, 48, and Yosawat Watcharathitiladakorn, 33, were arrested on charges of trafficking the drug aboard the cement truck.

Police quoted the drug trafficking suspects as saying they had been hired by an unidentified person to do the job in exchange for 500,000 baht (14,285 U.S. dollars) each.
