UNITED NATIONS, May 15 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appointed Ovais Sarmad as the new deputy head of UN climate body, a UN spokesperson said Monday.

"The Secretary-General has appointed Ovais Sarmad of India as Deputy Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at the Assistant Secretary-General level," said Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for Guterres, at the daily news briefing.

Sarmad will succeed Richard Kinley of Canada, to whom the Secretary-General and the Executive Secretary are grateful for his dedicated service to UN climate change efforts over the past 20 years, said the spokesperson.

Sarmad currently serves as Chief of Staff to the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), he said.
