ARUSHA, Tanzania, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of passengers on Tanzania's central line on Saturday survived after seven out of 17 train coaches crashed in the eastern region of Morogoro.
Rashid Kudema Ngwani, transport manager of the Tanzania Railway Limited (TRL) confirmed on the accident, saying that the passengers were traveling from the commercial capital Dar es Salaam to upcountry regions of Dodoma, Tabora, Kigoma, and Mwanza.
Ngwami said that the Saturday early hour's accident happened in an area located between the two stations of Mazimbu and Morogoro town nearly 200 kilometers from Dar es Salaam.
The official said that one person was injured in the rare train accident, whose cause was yet to be established.
The affected coaches were those located on the back side of the train, according to the TRL official.
It is estimated that the train had more than 800 passengers on board.
Rodgers Dili, Station Master of Morogoro said that passengers were given an alternative transport and they proceeded with their journey using a coach which was heading to Dar es Salaam from Kigoma.
In 2002, 200 people were killed after a passenger train collided with a goods train and derailed in central Tanzania's region of Dodoma, about 400 kilometers from Dar es Salaam.
