TIANJIN, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The Dutch innovator whose seven-meter-tall air-purifying tower attracted attention worldwide last year said he wants to have the product manufactured in China.
Daan Roosegaarde, designer of the "Smog Free Tower", told Xinhua that he is in talks with a company in north China's Tianjin Municipality.
The smog free tower is able to capture more than 70 percent of airborne smog particles 10 microns in diameter and 50 percent of those less than 2.5 microns in diameter, according to a study by Eindhoven University of Technology.
The tower, originally displayed in Beijing last year, was erected a month ago in Tianjin Minyuan Stadium, where local residents exercise daily.
Xie Xiaohui, president of Tianjin Film-method Works Green Technology, said she was optimistic about air purifiers market prospects.
"A smog-free park with an air-purifier in the center would be welcomed by the public," she said, adding that the company is currently in discussion with Roosegaarde about how to lower the costs.
Roosegaarde said he is also developing a bicycle that will purify the air for its rider. He wants to use similar innovative products to raise public awareness about environmental protection and smog reduction.
The products have triggered discussion on environmental issues, and showed how innovation can encourage change, said Ineke van de Pol, from the Netherlands Embassy in China.
