VIENNA, May 11 (Xinhua) -- An Austrian research expert has been anticipating an early election following the resignation of vice chancellor and head of the People's Party, Reinhold Mitterlehner, on Wednesday.

Wolfgang Bachmayer from market research institute OGM told the Austria Press Agency in an interview on Thursday that Mitterlehner's resignation "automatically means new elections."

"Everything else is unthinkable," he added.

He said likely replacement for Mitterlehner, the current Minister for Foreign Affairs Sebastian Kurz, will probably want early elections as "the longer it takes, the more risks could occur."

Chancellor Christian Kern reiterated on Thursday that early elections would not solve anything.

Bachmayer for his part said he believes a "quick new election date" will soon be decided for September or October.
