MONROVIA, May 11 (Xinhua) -- An estimated 45 million U.S. dollars will be spent on Liberia's forthcoming presidential and parliamentary elections, the electoral body said on Thursday.
Lamin Lighe, head of the country's National Elections Commission (NEC), told reporters here the money is budgeted for logistics, voter education, ballot printing and other key electoral activities.
The larger part of the money will be provided by the Liberian government, Lighe noted, saying the country's international partners and donor organizations had shown interest to donate toward the electoral process.
"Already the government has so far provided 14 million dollars out of the money," the electoral chief added.
Being a low-income country, Liberia relies heavily on foreign assistance.
The west African country is richly endowed with a climate favorable to agriculture, forests, mineral resources and water.
The general elections will be held on October 10, during which the President will be elected after a two-round voting system and 73 members of the House of Representatives will emerge through a first-past-the-post voting process in single-member constituencies.
