UNITED NATIONS, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic (CAR) continued to search for a missing peacekeeper Wednesday after a major attack killed four peacekeepers and injured 10 others.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the attack against a United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) convoy on Monday night near Bangassou "is regrettably the biggest attack against peacekeepers in the country so far."
"There are now 10 wounded soldiers, including nine Moroccans and one Cambodian," said Dujarric, noting that the mission is working with local actors in Mbomou and Bangassou to search for the missing blue helmet.
The President of the UN General Assembly, Peter Thomson, arrived in the capital Bangui Wednesday on a pre-scheduled trip, and visited the wounded peacekeepers, said Dujarric.
Despite significant progress and successful elections, the Central African Republic has remained in the grip of instability and sporadic unrest.
Clashes between the mainly Muslim Seleka rebel coalition and anti-Balaka militia, mostly Christian, plunged the country of 4.5 million people into civil conflict in 2013.
