Spain probes death of 2 teenagers in elevator accident

MADRID, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Spanish authorities on Wednesday continued to investigate a freak elevator accident in Madrid in which two 17-year-olds lost their lives.

The accident happened at around 17.00 hours on Tuesday afternoon in the exclusive "Barrio Salamanca" district in the center of Madrid.

The two youngsters, a boy and a girl, died when the floor of the elevator they were in gave way on the ninth floor of the building, causing them to drop into the void below and fall to their deaths.

Emergency services confirmed the teenagers, who were described as "friends", died as the result of "multiple traumas".

Following the accident, psychologists from the Samur Civil protection agency attended friends and family of the two victims in a mobile hospital which they erected in the street outside of the building where the accident happened.

Neighbors confirmed to local media that the building where the accident happened had only recently undergone renovation work and that the elevator had its safety certificate in order.
