NEW DELHI, May 10 (Xinhua) -- India's top court Wednesday took its leap towards becoming a paperless and digital court, officials said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the digital filing system of the Supreme Court in New Delhi during a function.

The prime minister uploaded the integrated case management information system on the Supreme Court website, which marks the introduction of digital filing -- a step towards paperless Supreme Court, an official spokesman said.

Modi said paperless initiatives save environment and therefore was a great service for future generations.

Chief Justice of India, Justice J S Khehar described the initiative as the "biggest leap" towards introducing technology in the judicial system.

The new system will help litigants access data and information online.

Legal experts say the step would go a long way in introducing technology in the Indian judicial system and would set a healthy precedence for subordinate courts.
