SOFIA, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The new Bulgarian government at its first sitting here on Wednesday decided to nominate Mariya Gabriel as a candidate for European Commissioner.
On Tuesday, Gabriel will meet with the European Commission (EC) President Jean-Claude Juncker, and then the European Parliament must approve her candidacy.
Regardless of her responsibilities in the EC, her top priority would be to protect the interests of Bulgaria and the common European values, Gabriel said.
Former Bulgarian European Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva was a vice-president of the EC where she was responsible for budget and human resources. She resigned in October 2016 in order to become chief executive officer of the World Bank.
