PRAGUE, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Czech Education, Youth and Sports Minister Katerina Valachova announced on Tuesday that she will resign as of May 31.
Deputy Education Minister Simona Kratochvilova was accused for a scandal around a suspected misuse of the ministry's subsidies going to sport organizations and associations.
Kratochvilova and Czech Football Association chairman Miroslav Pelta were both taken into custody late last week. Some politicians called on Valachova to resign for this reason in recent days.
Valachova said she has offered her resignation to Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka on her own initiative. She said she does not want the current situation in the ministry to be misused in "political squabbling" or in pre-election arguments against her party.
Czech President Milos Zeman's spokesman Jiri Ovcacek said the president will meet Valachova after May 18 upon return from an overseas visit.
