KHARTOUM, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Sudanese citizens on Tuesday protested in front of the United Nations (UN) Head-Office in Khartoum in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli jails.

National Federation of Sudanese Youths, a number of Sudanese parties, unions and the Palestinian Embassy in Khartoum took part in the protest.

The protesters handed a memorandum to the UN Representative in Sudan, demanding the international organization to intervene to improve the conditions of the Palestinian prisoners and force Israel to respect the international humanitarian law.

"Today we stand here in front of the UN to deliver our voice on importance of urgent intervention to save the Palestinian prisoners," Abdulmoneim Al-Sunni, Secretary General of the Council for International People's Friendship, told Xinhua.

"We call on the free world and all peace and justice advocates to stand with us to put pressure in the Zionist entity to end the suffering of the Palestinian prisoners," he added.

Palestinian Ambassador in Khartoum, Sameer Abdul-Jabbar, for his part, hailed the initiative by the civil society organizations in Sudan.

"This stand of protest is a reminder for the UN of the daily violations committed by the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli jails," he told Xinhua.

"The stand also draws the attention of the international organizations to the apartheid policy adopted by the occupying state," he added.

Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails have gone on an open hunger strike since last April 17 demanding improvement of their conditions of captivity.

The hunger strike is led by the leading member of the central committee of the Palestinian Liberation Movement (Fatah), Marwan Barghouti, who has been held since 2002.
