CHICAGO, May 8 (Xinhua) -- The remains of a U.S. sailor who died during the Pearl Harbor attack by the Japanese army in 1941 have been identified and will return to his hometown in Iowa state.
Fireman William H. Kennedy was killed aboard the USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor in 1941. His remains were identified earlier this year, Radio Iowa reported on Monday.
Kennedy's remains will be brought back to Iowa later this week for proper burial. A funeral has been planned in his hometown of Titonka, Kossuth County on Friday.
The fallen sailor was identified through DNA analysis within a program initiated in 2015 by the U.S. Department of Defense to identify remains from the battleship.
Oklahoma was sunk by Japanese torpedoes on Dec.7, 1941, when Japan launched a sudden attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. More than 400 crew died when the battleship capsized.
