GARISSA, Kenya, May 8 (Xinhua) -- At least six Kenyan security officers were injured in a bomb blast on Monday in the northeast region of Garissa near the Somali border.

A senior government official and Kenya Red Cross said the six casualties, who were injured in Liboi border post, have been airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment.

The official said the security officers were travelling in a Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) vehicle along Liboi-Dadaab road when an improvised explosive device hit the motor vehicle.

"Three of the police officers were seriously injured while three other occupants were slightly injured," said the official who declined to be named. "The vehicle was extensively damaged."

The Kenya Red Cross later said the six have been airlifted to two hospitals in Nairobi for specialized treatment.

Somali militant group Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying its fighters killed four government soldiers, including two commanders.

The group frequently exaggerates the number of troops or civilians they kill or injure, while the government rarely gives exact tolls.

Kenya is currently engaged in a fight against the militant group in southern Somalia where it has been registering impressive gains by wiping out insurgents in the region.

Al-Shabaab has vowed reprisal attacks in the country, mainly targeting security forces in border towns of northern Kenya, where dozens of people have been killed in landmine and grenade attacks blamed on the militant group.
