TIANJIN, May 8 (Xinhua) -- U.S. electric car maker Tesla announced it plans to expand the scale of its global charging networks this year to save charging time for drivers.

Tesla said it will significantly expand its public charging networks to provide convenient charging services for drivers during long distance travel or for those who do not have stable home charging facilities, according to sources with Tesla Motors China.

Tesla has built more than 5,400 superchargers around the world since its global supercharger network was put into use in 2012. With a supercharger, the vehicle can be fully charged in minutes instead of hours.

Meanwhile, Tesla also established a charging network with over 9,000 destination chargers in some public places such as hotels, office buildings, resorts and restaurants across the world.

By the end of 2017, Tesla will double the number of superchargers to more than 10,000 and increase the number of destination chargers to around 15,000.

Tesla will also expand its public charging network in China. In the past three years, Tesla has set up 514 superchargers in 74 Chinese cities and 1,988 destination chargers in public places in 170 cities. Enditem
