KABUL, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Five Taliban militants have been killed and six others wounded after a U.S. drone struck militants in Afghanistan's eastern city of Maidan Shar, the Afghan Defense Ministry said on Monday.
The strike was launched on specific intelligence inputs on Sunday, in surrounding areas of the city, 35 km east of Kabul, which is the provincial capital of eastern province of Wardak, the ministry said in a statement.
Among those killed was Noor Aqa, a local Taliban leader and the elimination of the targeted militants will further improve the public security in the province, it noted.
The Taliban-led insurgency has been on the rampage since late last month when the Taliban insurgents launched their annual rebel offensive and intensified attacks across the country.
The militant group has yet to make comments.
