TOKYO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- The China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) helps support regional growth and reduce poverty in Asia, said Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda on Tuesday.

Asia needs all kinds of effort to fight poverty as the inequality in the region is widening, Kuroda said after making a speech in Yokohama, Japan.

He applauded China's help with infrastructure development and fund raising in the area through the AIIB and was quoted by the AP news agency as saying: "It is simply not possible for the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank to fill the gap completely."

He also said the fact that the AIIB has attracted many members around the world is "good."

Established in October 2014, the AIIB's membership has now reached 70, outnumbering that of the ADB, which is led by Japan and has attracted 67 countries and regions to join in.
