TUNIS, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia's trade deficit has intensified in the first quarter of this year, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) of Tunisia announced on Tuesday.
The deficit has hit over 3,800 million dinars, or about 1,590 million U.S. dollars. It widened 8 percent year on year to 66 percent, INS said.
The continued worsening of Tunisia's trade deficit is attributed to higher expansion of imports than exports, with increase rate of 20.3 percent and 7.4 percent, respectively, according to INS.
As to the sharp increase of the country's imports, INS said it is due to larger crude oil imports as well as the surge in imports of agri-food and non-consumer products. Enditem
