LOME, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Celebrations marking the 57th anniversary of Togo's independence on Thursday culminated with a military and civilian parade.
President Faure Gnassingbe, Prime Minister Selom Klassou, parliament speaker Drama Dramani and other senior officials and opposition leaders were among those attending the celebrations on the avenue of the new presidential palace, on the northern outskirts of the capital city, Lome.
Togo became independent on April 20, 1960.
On Thursday, a special tribute was paid to Sylvanus Olympio, the first president of the country, who was assassinated in a coup in 1963.
