BANGKOK, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Five rangers were killed and one seriously wounded in a bomb and firearm attack by unknown assailants in southernmost Thailand on Thursday, police said.

A pickup truck carrying 6 army-trained rangers was stopped on a road with a land mine around 2 p.m. local time (7 a.m. GMT) in Chanae district of Narathiwat province, about 1,100 kilometers south of the Thai capital.

Moments after the bomb attack, the assailants, believed to be insurgents in the turbulent Deep South of the country, quickly emerged and shot the rangers at point blank range, killing four and wounding two of them, the police said.

Another ranger died after being sent to hospital.

The assailants threw around nails on the surface of the road along the way to obstruct chase by the authorities.
