BUCHAREST, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Romanian population continues its declining tendency and population aging in 2016, the National Institute of Statistics said Wednesday.

The resident population, which also includes Romanians officially registered in the country but living and working abroad, was 22.223 million on Jan. 1, 2017, down 0.2 percent from a year earlier.

More than 3.55 million people were in the elderly age bracket, while the young population aged zero to 14 were 3.28 million.

The average age of the population was 41.1 years, 0.2 years higher than on Jan. 1, 2016, while the median age was 40.8 years, up 0.4 years in the same period.

As a consequence of the pro-natalist policies in the socialist period, Romania had higher fertility until 1990. In common with many European countries, Romania has experienced a decline in population in recent years, due to low birthrate and increased life expectancy.
