SOFIA, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian law enforcement authorities have seized 214 kg of heroin at Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint near the country's southeastern border with Turkey, Bulgaria Customs said Wednesday in a statement.

The illicit drug was discovered on Monday after an X-ray examination of a truck carrying cans of chicken breading spice from Iran to Poland, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said in a statement.

The heroin was hidden in 468 of the cans, the statement said.

The driver of the vehicle, a 31-year-old Iranian citizen, was arrested at the scene.

Authorities estimated the value of the seized heroin on the black market would exceed 7.74 million U.S. dollars.

The investigation is ongoing, the statement added.

Bulgaria, a key transit route for drugs smuggled from Asia to Europe, seized more than 500 kg of heroin in 2016, official data showed.
