ANKARA, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Around 70 militants of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and its Syrian offshoot the People's Protection Units (YPG) have been killed in Iraq and Syria by Turkish airstrike, military sources said Tuesday.

According to local media, Turkish warplanes conducted heavy air raids against PKK and YPG targets in Iraq's Sinjar and northern Syria, in which shelters, arsenals and communication centers belonging to the militants were destroyed.

The military operations were launched on previously identified targets in the region to prevent PKK from smuggling weapons and explosives into Turkey for future attacks, the military statement said.

Founded in 1978, the PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the EU, resumed its armed campaign in July 2015 after a brief reconciliation.
