KIEV, April 24 (Xinhua) -- The Ukrainian authorities will stop electricity supplies to the pro-independence insurgents controlled Lugansk region, due to the non-payment of power supply bills, a senior Ukrainian energy official said Monday.

"Starting from midnight on April 25, the electricity flows to the non-controlled area will be completely stopped," Volodymyr Grytsay, head of the government-controlled Lugansk energy union, told local media.

He said that Kiev no longer can afford to supply electricity worth 7.9 million U.S. dollars per month for free to the insurgent-controlled territory.

Meanwhile, the rebel authorities of Lugansk region said that the energy system of the region is ready for power shortages.
