RABAT, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Morocco and Cuba decided to re-establish diplomatic relations, Morocco's foreign ministry announced in a statement late on Friday.

The ministry said the two countries signed a joint statement on the re-establishment of the relationships at the level of ambassadors at the United Nations.

The king of Morocco, Mohammed VI, has ordered a quick opening of Morocco's embassy in Cuba's capital Havana, the statement said.

The decision is a part of the proactive diplomacy open to new partners and geographic spaces, the ministry pointed out.

Local media has reported last week that the king was on a private visit to Cuba with his family.
