TEHRAN, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Heavey rains in Iran's East Azerbaijan province in northwest of the country has claimed the lives of at least 18 people, state TV reported on Saturday.
In the unprecedented floods, twelve people were also injured, Pir-Hossein Koulivand, the head of Iran's Center for Emergency Medical Services, said.
The downpours, started Friday, has been the heaviest last seen 40 years ago, according to Press TV.
The Ajab-Shir and Azar-Shahr regions in the province had borne the burst of disaster, amid the reports that water level in the rivers of Azar-Shahr has risen to the highest levels over the past decades.
