BEIJING, April 15 (Xinhua) -- "The Fate of the Furious" broke two Chinese box office records with ticket sales of 446 million yuan (around 64.9 million U.S. dollars) on its opening, including previews.

The latest instalment in the Hollywood blockbuster "Fast and Furious" pulled in 386 million yuan on Friday, the biggest day ever in Chinese box office history, according to data from cinema website Maoyan.com.

The previous record holder was domestic fantasy movie "Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back," which earned 356 million yuan on its premiere in January.

"The Fate of the Furious" set another record Thursday night for the highest revenue from midnight screenings, gathering 59.8 million yuan to overtake the record of 52.5 million yuan made by its prequel "Furious 7" in April 2015.

The new records are impressive given that "Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back" opened on Lunar New Year's Day, the second day of a holiday week in China, and midnight previews of "Furious 7" were on a Saturday night, while "The Fate of the Furious" opened on a work day.
