DAVAO CITY, the Philippines, April 13 (Xinhua) -- A 5.2-magnitude earthquake jolted southern Philippines on Thursday, a day after a stronger temblor that rocked the region, damaging several structures, state seismologists said.

The latest quake, the strongest aftershock of Wednesday's 6.0-magnitude temblor, struck around 4:01 a.m. local time, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Tectonic in origin, the quake's epicenter was located 47 km west of Wao town, a mountainous town in Mindanao's Lanao del Sur province at a depth of 10-km, according to Phivolcs.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded Thursday's quake at 5.4-magnitude.

Phivolcs said the latest quake could also cause damages, particularly in the town closest to the epicenter.

Aftershocks are also expected, the state seismology agency said.

The Philippines sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where continental plates collide, causing frequent quakes and volcanic activity.

The country's southern region has been hit recently with relatively powerful quakes, including February's 6.7-magnitude which killed or wounded over 100 people in the eastern province of Surigao.
