PRAGUE, April 12 (Xinhua) -- The Czech Republic will tighten security measures during Easter holidays, said Interior Minister Milan Chovanec at a press conference on Wednesday.

Over 500 police officers armed with assault rifles will preventively be in towns and all Czech international airports,

Chovanec said he did not presume that the military would have to be called. However, if needed, the military may provide around 600 soldiers to help the police.

The minister also said the tightened security measures were related to Easter and the Jewish Passover whose celebrations coincide this year. The measures were only preventive because there was no information saying the security of the Czech Republic was threatened.

The measures will be most visible in Prague, but the police patrols will also be in other regions. Police Presidium spokeswoman Iveta Martinkova said that the police patrols on the streets will be enhanced since Thursday.

During Easter holidays. the police will also increase their checks on road traffic in a national action involving 3,000 police officers.
