RIGA, April 12 (Xinhua) -- The United States will remain a "steadfast friend and ally of Latvia", U.S. President Donald Trump wrote in a recent letter to his Latvian counterpart Raimonds Vejonis.

According to information posted on the Latvian president's official website on Wednesday, the American leader sent a letter to Vejonis in response to his congratulatory message to Trump upon his election as U.S. President.

In the letter, Trump acknowledged the importance of transatlantic ties and reaffirmed the United States' commitment to security obligations both within NATO and in the framework of bilateral U.S.-Latvia relations.

"I appreciate very much the Latvian commitment to spending two percent of gross domestic product on defense, which creates a good example of burden-sharing between the allies. I also appreciate Latvian participation in security and anti-terrorism missions in Afghanistan and Iraq," Trump said in the letter.

Trump also expressed readiness to develop business and investment exchanges between the two countries, noting that Latvia's admission to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) was proof of the progress Latvia had achieved in improving its business climate.
